Tips for Storing Your RV, Boat, or Vehicle at Steve's Self Storage

Whether you're parking your RV, boat, or vehicle for a few months or long-term, a little prep goes a long way. Here's how to keep your ride in top shape while it's stored:

1. Lock It Down – Security First

  • Always lock doors, windows, and storage compartments before leaving.
  • Remove valuables—radios, GPS devices, tools, or anything thieves might find tempting.
  • Add extra security like a wheel lock, steering lock, or even a GPS tracker for peace of mind.

2. Weather Protection – Minnesota Heat & Cold Can Be Brutal

  • Covered parking? Great! It shields from sun damage and prevents snow buildup.
  • Outdoor storage? Use a breathable cover—cheap plastic tarps trap moisture and can cause mold.
  • Keep tires inflated—cold weather deflates, summer heat expands! Check them before driving.

3. Keep Pests Out – No One Wants Uninvited Guests

  • Remove all food, crumbs, and trash—mice will find them. Trust us.
  • Use moisture absorbers inside to prevent mold and mildew.
  • Block exhaust pipes and small openings with mesh or steel wool—rodents love warm hiding spots.

4. Battery & Fuel Maintenance – Avoid Future Headaches

  • If storing long-term, disconnect the battery or use a trickle charger to prevent draining.
  • Fill the gas tank & add a fuel stabilizer—prevents condensation from forming.
  • If possible, run the engine or generator occasionally to keep things in working order.

5. Don't Cram Everything Inside – Store Your Gear Nearby

  • Instead of stuffing your RV with camping chairs, hoses, fishing rods, and grills, rent a nearby storage unit too. It's a great way to keep everything in a central location and ready to go!
  • It keeps everything organized and easily accessible—no more digging through your RV when it's time to pack up.
